What the French Ministry of Culture records

Lectoure entre au milieu du XIVe siècle dans la mouvance des comtes d'Armagnac, et ceux-ci installent leur château-résidence à l'ouest de l'éperon qui domine la ville, sur les vestiges d'un château pré-existant. Le château subit d'importantes destructions lors du siège de la ville par Louis XI (1472-1473). Devenu propriété royale, il est réparé, puis connaît des travaux d'aménagement jusqu'au XVIIe siècle. Entre 1583 et 1590, il est séparé de la ville par un double bastion. Une partie des lieux sert de prison. En 1758, l'évêque Claude-François de Narbonne-Pelet demande à Louis XV de lui céder le château, afin d'y établir un hôpital-manufacture destiné à remplacer l'hôpital du Saint-Esprit. Ayant obtenu une réponse favorable, il fait édifier de 1758 à 1766 un vaste bâtiment de plan en U. Le bastion séparant le château de la ville est supprimé. Seule l'extrémité ouest du château est conservée pour y installer la pharmacie et les dépendances de l'hôpital. Le bastion nord du château s'effondre peu après 1824. L'aile sud et la chapelle de l'hôpital sont achevés entre 1808 et 1812 ; la chapelle est décorée par le peintre lectourois Lasseran. De nouveaux bâtiments sont élevés au XIXe siècle, au nord et au sud, et l'hôpital est finalement désaffecté en 2013.
