Perched on the rocky spur overlooking Lectoure, the remains of the castle of the counts of Armagnac occupy a defensive site chosen from the start for being nearly impregnable. Home to the counts of Armagnac until Louis XI's troops took the town in 1473, the site later served as the governor's residence and then as a prison, before being largely demolished in the 18th century to make way for a hospital. What survives today are ramparts, a bastion and part of the older buildings, interwoven with the hospital structures that replaced them.
