To make a day of it

Château de Villevert stands in Esse (Charente), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: fourth quarter of the 19th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Villevert Castle, built in the final quarter of the nineteenth century, features a U-shaped layout formed by three wings. Its architectural ensemble, entrusted to architect Félix Perrin, is distinguished by a central gallery opened by three large arcades overlooking the interior courtyard, completed by two towers flanking side pavilions. Standing adjacent to the north of the estate is the Chapel of Saint Helena, erected in 1880 in memory of the Baroness Helena, whose interior is adorned with paintings, mosaics and stained glass.

What to know

  • The Chapel of Saint Helena, listed as a historic monument, is the focal point of the interior décor with its stained glass windows, one of which reproduces a design created in 1833 for the baptismal fonts of a Charente church.
  • The stations of the cross are displayed in oak wood frames fixed to the base of the chapel walls.
  • The reduced south-east pavilion of the castle may bear witness to an earlier building predating the nineteenth-century reconstruction.
  • The interior of the chapel features representations of angels bearing the instruments of the Passion placed on either side of the altar.
