In Bièvres, in the valley that once drew Victor Hugo and fellow writers, the château de Vauboyen stands in Palladian style above the small station bearing its name. Built of millstone grit in the early 19th century, it is notable for its porticoed façades with Tuscan columns, its cast iron balustraded terrace and its Egyptian inspired monumental gate opening onto the park. The whole estate, including outbuildings and garden structures, reflects the Empire era taste for antique architecture adapted to the countryside near Paris.
