What the French Ministry of Culture records

En 1844, Alexandre Dumas père décide de s'installer sur le coteau de Port-Marly et d'y faire construire une demeure campagnarde. Il demande d'abord à l'architecte Planté la construction d'une maison. Le "château" de Monte-Cristo est inauguré le 27 juillet 1847, l'architecte Durand ayant succédé à Planté ; il s'agit d'un pavillon Renaissance composé d'un rez-de-chaussée surmonté de deux étages ; à l'intérieur se trouve le salon mauresque décoré de motifs orientaux par deux sculpteurs tunisiens. A environ 200 mètres du château se trouve le "castel gothique", le château d'If, ressemblant à un donjon miniature ; dans la maçonnerie extérieure, sont gravés les titres des oeuvres d'Alexandre Dumas. Tout autour du château, s'étendait un parc à l'anglaise. En 1853, ruiné et poursuivi par ses créanciers, Dumas vend le domaine.
