Built at the end of the 18th century for Jean-Baptiste Jourdain de Thieulloy, a former mayor of Amiens, the château de Saint-Gratien is a neo-classical folly raised in local chalk. Its central pavilion, decorated with sculptures by François Gruau, flanked by two lower wings, sits within an eight-hectare landscape park and has remained in the same family since it was built. In 1918 Australian general Monash set up his headquarters here ahead of the Battle of Hamel, an episode still tied to the site.
