To make a day of it

Château de Saint-Didier-d'Allier stands in Saint-Didier-d'Allier (Haute-Loire), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 15th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Overlooking the Allier gorges, this castle in Haute-Loire takes the form of an almost square fortified house, its cellars still showing traces of the 13th century and, at the lowest level, of the Romanesque period. First recorded in 1256, it was destroyed in the 14th century and rebuilt soon after, while its window openings were altered in the 18th century. Inside, several rooms retain their 17th century fittings, painted woodwork, camaïeu canvases and decorated ceilings, particularly in the dining room and the salon.
