To make a day of it

Château de Mercœur stands in Saint-Privat-d'Allier (Haute-Loire), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 13th century, 18th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Above the village of Saint-Privat-d'Allier stand the ruins of the Mercœur fortress, raised in the 13th century by the family whose name it bears. The round keep, originally built as a visual relay point overlooking neighbouring castles, rises above a partly collapsed main building and an unfinished 18th century wing. Gothic-moulded fireplaces remain, and inside the keep a painted vault, thought to date from the 17th century, can still be seen. Uninhabited since 1914, the site can also be reached via a waymarked trail linking Saint-Privat to the chapel of Rochegude.
