What the French Ministry of Culture records

Seigneurie connue dès le 13e siècle, détenue à l'époque par Alphonse de Poitiers, frère de Saint-Louis. Le quadrilatère du château était protégé par une enceinte externe dont ne subsistent que les terrasses et les deux tours encadrant la porte d'entrée. Du château lui-même subsistent le donjon, une tour et une partie de la tourelle d'escalier desservant le logis lié au donjon. Le donjon s'ouvre en quatre niveaux vers le corps de logis intérieur. Des vestiges de peintures murales apparaissent au deuxième étage du donjon. Cette forteresse, en majorité du 14e siècle, est intéressante par son architecture très caractéristique de l'Auvergne et du Velay, aussi bien par le plan que par les détails.
