What the French Ministry of Culture records

La famille de Saint-Arcons occupe les lieux fortifiés jusqu'au 13e siècle puis l'édifice passe à différentes familles. Au 14e siècle, les De Peyre donnent le château, en tant que prieuré, à l'abbaye bénédictine des Chazes. Ce prieuré est réuni à la mense abbatiale en 1403. Le château présente aujourd'hui un corps de bâtiment rectangulaire s'appuyant, du côté sud-est, sur l'église paroissiale. La façade nord-est ouvre sur la cour intérieure avec remparts de soutènement maçonnés. Dans cette cour apparaissent encore différents vestiges bâtis. La façade sur l'Allier conserve une tour semi-circulaire hors oeuvre, ayant conservé des archères de flanquement. La façade sur cour est flanquée en son centre d'une tour d'escalier en vis (15e siècle) , en 3/4 hors oeuvre. Cette tour s'ouvre d'une porte à linteau horizontal à saillie supérieure formant larmier avec retombées latérales sur écu. La tour semi-circulaire est couverte d'une voûte d'ogives sexpartite à retombée centrale en pénétration sur le noyau de l'escalier. Cette voûte a conservé d'intéressants vestiges peints (Annonciation du 16e siècle ?). Ces constructions du 11e au 15e siècle, ont été fortement mutilées et une partie a été transformée en maisons agricoles. Ce château représente, dans son état actuel, un intéressant témoignage d'architecture monastique fortifiée de la fin du Moyen-Age.
