To make a day of it

Château de Rochebrune stands in Étagnac (Charente), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century, 17th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Standing at the crossing of old roads linking Limoges, Angoulême and Niort, the château de Rochebrune raises its four corner towers surrounded by a moat, in the commune of Étagnac in the Charente region. Its first tower is said to date back to the crusades, though the building as it now appears owes much to the 16th century. Inside, a painted ceiling dated 1581 bears the coats of arms of the Montluc and Rochechouart families, a trace of a stronghold that gradually turned from a defensive post into a more comfortable residence.
