Near Exideuil-sur-Vienne, in the Charente region, the château de la Chétardie combines two 11th-century towers topped with pepper-pot roofs and a rectangular main building rebuilt in the 17th century. The notable feature is a rounded annex added at the back in the 18th century by Jacques-Joachim Trotti de La Chétardie, a diplomat who served Louis XV in Russia, who had a round painted salon built there recalling his years in Saint Petersburg. The approach is along a tree-lined avenue, through a gatehouse crossing dry moats.
