To make a day of it

Château de Richelieu stands in Richelieu (Indre-et-Loire), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 17th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Of the lavish château built by Cardinal Richelieu in the 17th century, only scattered fragments remain, though each carries its share of history: an entrance forecourt, a freestanding pavilion known as the Dôme, moats, and two further pavilions set within the gardens. Most of the building was torn down in the 19th century, sold off stone by stone by a property dealer. A visit here means tracing the outline of a vanished residence rather than touring an intact château, set within the planned town the cardinal had built alongside it. The gap between the original ambition and what survives today is precisely what makes the site worth seeing.

What to know

  • The site is a listed historic monument, which protects the remaining structures.
  • What survives is limited to the entrance forecourt, the pavilion known as the Dôme, the moats, and two garden pavilions.
  • The château itself no longer stands; this is a walk among remnants rather than a visit to a complete building.
  • No information on admission fees, opening hours or accessibility is available for this listing.
  • The town of Richelieu, built at the same time as the château on a planned grid, is part of what makes the visit worthwhile.
