What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le château de Purnon et ses communs sont construits de 1771 à 1785 vraisemblablement à l'emplacement d'un château primitif. Une longue avenue aménagée en 1812, des terrasses et l'ordonnance des communs confèrent à ce château une grande majesté. Un bâtiment du 17e siècle de grande qualité se trouve au lieu-dit le Moulin-Bijard. Le potager, qui précède ce bâtiments, accueille une éolienne tout à fait exceptionnelle. Cette dernière, construite en 1900 par E. Lebert, qui avait pris la succession des Etablissements A. Bollée au Mans en 1898, était destinée à alimenter en eau le potager et le château. Elle est portée par une colonne en fonte autour de laquelle s'enroule un escalier qui permet l'accès à une galerie que surmonte la turbine éolienne avec distributeur. Le tout mesure près de 15 m de haut. La turbine actionne trois corps de pompe à piston placés dans un édicule circulaire au pied de l'ouvrage. Les pompes aspirent et refoulent l'eau stockée ensuite dans un réservoir d'une capacité de 9000 litres placé au sommet d'une tour maçonnée. La rareté d'un tel ensemble, ajoutée à des caractères esthétiques indéniables, a conduit à sa protection.
