In the Loiret department, the château d'Augerville stands on a site fortified since the Middle Ages, still ringed by its original moat. The four corner towers recall the time of Jacques Cœur, treasurer to King Charles VII, who bought the ruined property in the mid 15th century. The rectangular main building, topped by a steep roof with stone dormers, dates from the 16th century, while the outbuildings and dovecote retain their 17th century character. Several French monarchs, including Catherine de Médicis and Charles IX, stopped here.
