To make a day of it

Château Saint-Jean de Nogent-le-Rotrou stands in Nogent-le-Rotrou (Eure-et-Loir), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 17th century). Adult admission costs 5 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Saint-Jean castle stands above Nogent-le-Rotrou on a rocky spur overlooking the Huisne valley, at a crossing point of old roads linking Île-de-France, Normandy and Maine. Its rectangular Romanesque keep, built in the 11th century by the counts of Perche, ranks among the oldest surviving examples of its kind in France. The site took its current name in memory of Rotrou IV, who died before Saint-Jean-d'Acre during the Third Crusade. Visitors today find an enclosure lined with towers, an inner courtyard, a 16th-century well topped with a stone dome, and a wooded park.
