What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le château égalait celui de Richelieu, ce qui causa sa destruction. Il fut commencé par Louis Ier de bourbon et achevé par Louis II, premier duc de Montpensier. En 1625, Marie de Bourbon l'apporte en dot à Gaston d'Orléans. En 1635, le duc d'Orléans est invité par le Cardinal à échanger Champigny pour la seigneurie de Bois-le-Vicomte, et le contrat stipule que le château sera rasé à la réserve des servitudes. Seule la chapelle échappe à la destruction, le pape Urbain VIII qui y a officié, refusant son autorisation. En 1656, la restitution est obtenue par la fille de Gaston d'Orléans. Des réparations sont faites sur les communs, utilisés comme habitation principale. Ces communs, avec quelques murs d'enceinte, sont les seuls restes du château construit par Louis de Bourbon. Ce sont trois corps de bâtiments en équerre entourant l'ancienne basse cour. Celui du centre présente deux étages avec, en son milieu, un pavillon surélevé et en saillie et, à chaque extrémité, deux tours d'angle cylindriques couvertes d'un toit en coupole, surmonté d'un lanternon. La chapelle a été achevée vers 1540. J. Guillaume date le porche de 1549 (date inscrite à l'intérieur du porche) et non de 1570, il serait donc contemporain des bâtiments subsistants de l'avant-cour (datés de 1545 par une clef de voûte des écuries). Les vitraux de la chapelle sont un témoignage exceptionnel de l'art du vitrail du 16e siècle.
