Standing at the heart of the village of Montmaur, in the Lauragais region, this fortified castle built in the 15th century still looks like a medieval stronghold despite later alterations. Its four round towers, gate defended by two machicolations and sliding portcullis make it one of the few medieval castles to have kept such a defensive character. Inside, a courtyard with a well, mullioned windows and a spiral staircase tower show how the building later shifted toward residential use.
