Its name surfaces in the archives as early as 1214, when the local lord was called upon to settle a dispute between the abbey of Lagrasse and Simon de Montfort during the Albigensian Crusade. The site also inspired a 1972 novel for young readers, Le Faucon déniché, by Jean-Côme Noguès.
