Une partie du château date du 13e siècle ; l'autre a été bâtie par le Maréchal de Monluc en 1567. Ce château est l'une des dernières forteresses aménagées en France dans la seconde moitié du 16e siècle. L'édifice présente une forme triangulaire. Point de départ des expéditions de Monluc contre les Protestants, l'édifice est une sorte de redoute où il groupait ses troupes. Pour une plus grande sécurité, Monluc imagina un plan en trapèze autour d'une cour centrale avec des bâtiments de caserne aux murs hérissés de tours de défense, percés d'archères et de trous de couleuvrine. Adjonction d'éléments nouveaux imitiés des fortifications italiennes et annonçant les méthodes mises au point par Vauban. Pour la première fois apparaît le bastion, tel que Monluc l'avait expérimenté au siège de Sienne. La façade nord est encadrée de deux tours. La partie haute du bastion Est contenait sans doute la chapelle. A la fin de sa vie, il y écrivit des "Commentaires". Les cuisines ont conservé leur aspect du 14e siècle. Le cénotaphe est situé sur l'une des faces du mur d'enceinte. Il est en marbre blanc et porte une statue de gisant en partie mutilée. Les colonnes qui formaient l'entourage sont en partie brisées.
