What the French Ministry of Culture records

Château construit au 15e siècle pour Jean Dumesnil-Simon, gouverneur du Berry, sur l'emplacement d'une ancienne demeure ayant appartenu aux Sully à la fin du 13e siècle. De la reconstruction du 15e siècle subsiste le corps central flanqué d'une haute tour ronde à l'est et d'une tour d'escalier hexagonale à l'ouest. Une aile sud fut construite au 18e siècle et, entre 1861 et 1863, une aile nord. A cette occasion, l'ensemble de l'édifice fut remanié assez profondément dans le style néo-gothique (extérieurs et intérieurs), restauration menée à partir de 1860 par l'architecte Tarlier. Les décors intérieurs sont représentatifs des 18e et 19e siècles. En 1872 a eu lieu la pose de la rampe en bois de l'escalier monumental en pierre, modèle demeuré en place d'un ouvrage en fer forgé qui ne fut jamais exécuté.

Most of the estate as well as the French formal gardens are accessible to people with reduced mobility. Most of the visit on the ground floor is possible. The Duchess of Berry's bedroom (1st floor) is only accessible via the Escalier d'Honneur. Direct car access to the boutique reception is allowed. Reduced rate for PMR and accompanying person.
