Little remains standing of Lusignan castle, once among the largest fortresses built in France, except for scattered ruins on a promontory overlooking the surrounding valleys. Legendary birthplace of the fairy Mélusine and of the Lusignan lords, some of whom became kings of Cyprus and Jerusalem, the site was turned into a public walk as early as the 18th century. Visitors today find stretches of wall clinging to the cliff, remains of a keep, a cistern and the sealed entrance to an underground passage, set along a lime-tree avenue with views over the countryside.
