To make a day of it

Château de la Motte Vesset stands in Treteau (Allier), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, Temps Moderne, 19th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Built in the early 14th century at Tréteau, the Château de la Motte Vesset centers on a courtyard shaped by five centuries of modification. Raised near an earlier feudal motte, it carries traces of this long occupation: a gatehouse tower to the north, a blocky main residence flanked by round towers to the south, a staircase turret from the 15th century, and additional wings added from the 16th through 18th centuries. A landscaped park and agricultural buildings developed between the 18th and 19th centuries complete the picture of aristocratic rural life.

What to know

  • The castle has been listed as a historic monument since 2023, along with its park and agricultural outbuildings.
  • The structure was originally surrounded by a moat, which was drained during the 19th century.
  • The facades facing the park were remodeled between 1835 and 1865, giving the building a more contemporary appearance.
