To make a day of it

Château de la Barollière stands in Limonest (Rhône), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

On the slopes of Mont Verdun, in Limonest, the Château de la Barollière overlooks a wide landscape stretching to the Monts du Lyonnais. This medieval fortified castle, first recorded in 1374, has kept its rectangular main building flanked by four square towers and an old watchtower within the inner courtyard. In the 18th century, under Jean II Maritz, it gained panelled salons, trompe l'oeil paintings and woodwork that can still be seen today. The house remains in the hands of the descendants of the families who have owned it for over two centuries.
