To make a day of it

Château de Montmelas stands in Montmelas-Saint-Sorlin (Rhône), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched on a rocky spur in the Beaujolais region, Montmelas castle overlooks the Rhône valley from a site held by the Sires de Beaujeu in the Middle Ages. Traces of masonry from the 10th and 12th centuries remain in parts of the walls, though the building's present appearance owes much to alterations carried out after 1828 by Lyon architect Louis Dupasquier, a contemporary of Viollet-le-Duc. Visitors find a fortified enclosure, a keep, a courtyard of honour and a wooded park covering twenty hectares.
