Overlooking the Saône valley at more than 500 metres of altitude, the château de l'Hestrange is now a family-run wine estate in the heart of Beaujolais. The site's origins trace back to a 12th century watchtower, now part of the building's north wing, before the property passed by marriage to the Romanet de Lestrange family, ancestors of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The gardens still bear the mark of Louis Félix Billard, a trader who brought back from Egypt the two sphinxes now standing on the terrace. After a fire destroyed the historic house, restoration work aimed to keep the spirit of the place while modernising the cellars and reception areas.
