To make a day of it
Château de Gaussan stands in Bizanet (Aude), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 19th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
At Bizanet, in the Aude department, the château de Gaussan stands on the site of a fortified farm once run by the monks of Fontfroide abbey from the 13th century onward. The four ranges of buildings enclosing an inner courtyard still show 14th century masonry beneath 19th century alterations made when the estate turned to winegrowing. Visitors can make out a former keep pierced with arrow slits, machicolated facades, and inside, a broken barrel vaulted hall and a room known as the bishop's chamber under a ribbed false vault.
