To make a day of it

Château de Combronde stands in Combronde (Puy-de-Dôme), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 18th century). No visits are on record for this building.

Château de Combronde was built in the 18th century by the Capony family on the site of a medieval fortress once held by the Dauphins of Auvergne. Recognisable for its classical architecture with pavilions at each end, it stands out for its refined interior decoration: plasterwork, wrought iron, moulded woodwork and Versailles parquet. Converted into a town hall and collective housing after the French Revolution, it retains its first-floor apartments, including the hall of honour and library, which exemplify the aristocratic style of the Auvergne region during the Age of Enlightenment.

What to know

  • The castle is located in the heart of the village and houses municipal services; only certain historic rooms on the first floor are accessible for visits.
  • The interior was heavily modified in the 19th century but retains its period plasterwork, moulded woodwork and wrought iron.
  • The wrought-iron balconies and staircase rail, as well as five first-floor rooms with their original decoration, are listed as historic monuments.
  • The garden has lost a significant portion of its area since the Revolution.
