Standing on a promontory above the Mondot valley near Bon-Encontre, Castelnoubel castle shows its four round towers and ramparts built directly on the rock. The site has been occupied since the 10th or 11th century, though the present construction dates from the late 13th century, with further work in the following century. Visitors can see a rectangular hall lit by mullioned windows, a vaulted gallery forming a cloister, 15th century woodwork, and a corbelled turret on the north side. The castle was long contested among local lords, passing from the Marmande to the Durfort family amid shifting loyalties between the kings of France and England.
