To make a day of it

Château de Bilstein stands in Riquewihr (Haut-Rhin), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 14th century). Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Bilstein castle sits on a rocky spur at 757 metres, on the ridge of the Schlossberg above Riquewihr in the Vosges mountains. This 12th-century ruin, now a listed historic monument, is sometimes called the Alsatian Bilstein to distinguish it from another castle of the same name near Urbeis. Reaching it means a walk through forest before the ruins come into view.

  • Allow around one hour of walking from the car park to reach the ruins.
