What the French Ministry of Culture records

Un bâtiment médiéval a servi d'hôtel de ville de 1459 jusqu'en 1698, année où il fut affecté au Conseil souverain d'Alsace, plus haute juridiction de la province mise en place par Louis XIV. Pendant le 17e siècle, il a servi plusieurs fois de logements à des hôtes de marque, en particulier Louis XIV en 1681 et 1683. Au cours des siècles, l'édifice a subi des transformations : la première au 16e siècle, entre 1577 et 1595 : il en subsiste un bâtiment de caractère Renaissance ; la suivante a eu lieu de 1769 à 1771 en réutilisant les vestiges des bâtiments du 16e siècle. Les deux chapelles voûtées superposées sont des vestiges du couvent des Augustins, en grande partie remplacé par la maison d'arrêt.
