To make a day of it

Manoir de la Luzerne stands in Bernières-sur-Mer (Calvados), in the Normandie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: fourth quarter of the 15th century, 17th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

At the edge of Bernières-sur-Mer, this Norman manor hides behind tall walls a late 15th-century residence and one of the earliest Italian-style orangeries in Lower Normandy. The entrance door, carved with salamanders and sea creatures, and the dormer windows blending Gothic and Renaissance styles reflect the 17th-century alterations commissioned by a scholar from Caen. The estate also keeps a bakery, a dovecote and stables, remnants of the working farm once attached to the manor house.

What to know

  • The manor is a listed historic monument, with protection covering the facades, roofs, staircase and dining-room fireplace of the residence, as well as the orangery, bakery, enclosing walls, dovecote and stables.
  • No opening hours or days are available.
  • No admission fee is provided.
  • The estate combines the manor house with farm outbuildings separated since the early 20th century, so a visit likely focuses on the exteriors rather than full interior access.
