Château de Caen stands in Caen (Calvados), in the Normandie region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second half of the 11th century, 12th century, 14th century, 15th century, 16th century, 17th century, 18th century, 19th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le château de Caen a été fondé vers 1060 par Guillaume le Conquérant. Le donjon en pierre et la salle de l'Echiquier ont été élevés vers 1120 par Henri Ier Beauclerc, fils de Guillaume le Conquérant. Sous Philippe-Auguste, le donjon a été entouré d'une chemise flanquée de quatre tours circulaires et bordée de fossés. Au 14e siècle a été construit un logis (actuel logis du gouverneur) , remanié aux 16e et 18e siècles. L'église Saint-Georges, du 12e siècle, a été remaniée au 16e siècle (la nef lambrissée a gardé son ossature et ses fenêtres romanes). A partir du 17e siècle, le château a perdu son usage défensif et est devenu un lieu de garnison. Après la Révolution, donjon a été arasé, les fossés comblés et le site affecté à l'armée.
