To make a day of it

Logis de Barroux stands in Airvault (Deux-Sèvres), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

At Barroux, a hamlet within the commune of Airvault, a manor house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries stands around a square courtyard, together with its chapel, dovecote and outbuildings. Corner turrets evoke the still feudal spirit of the building, while inside a straight staircase with overlapping flights and painted decoration survive, including on the mantel of a fireplace and in the chancel of the chapel, where a star-studded vault rises above a painted altarpiece. Visitors can also see the sole surviving corner dovecote tower from the old defensive enclosure, and a double gateway combining a carriage entrance and a pedestrian door leading into the courtyard.
