What the French Ministry of Culture records
L'existence du château est mentionnée dès 810. L'édifice fut à deux reprises détruit par les Anglais (12e et 14e siècle), puis reconstruit au 15e siècle. En 1793, le château fut incendié et les biens confisqués. L'édifice est entouré de larges douves en eau. L'ensemble est constitué de nombreux bâtiments disparates, décrivant un plan irrégulier en amande, qui encadrent une cour plane sensiblement pentagonale. La pierre siliceuse rose-rouge, abondante dans la région, fut utilisée pour édificer les parties anciennes, ainsi que le granit local gris bleuté.
