To make a day of it

Donjon de Moncontour stands in Moncontour (Vienne), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

On a mound overlooking the Dive valley stands the keep of Moncontour, the only part still rising to its full height of twenty four metres, the last remnant of a stronghold built around 1040 by Foulques Nerra. Thick walls with flat buttresses, ruined surrounding walls and the remains of a nearby church bear witness to three centuries of alterations, from the 12th to the 14th century. Visitors come for the lone silhouette of the square tower, visible from afar, and for the atmosphere of a military ruin set among open fields.
