To make a day of it

Domaine de Valgenceuse stands in Senlis (Oise), in the Hauts-de-France region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 18th century). The building is not open to visitors.

Set along the banks of the Nonette river in Senlis, the Valgenceuse estate pairs a neoclassical château rebuilt at the end of the 18th century with grounds first laid out in the 17th century. Visitors find a formal grove lined with box hedges, a water mirror cut into the course of the river and a balustraded terrace adorned with statues overlooking it all. In the 19th century the park hosted a literary salon frequented by Alfred de Vigny, Gérard de Nerval and both Alexandre Dumas, father and son.

What to know

  • The estate is a privately owned 8-hectare park, parts of which are classified or listed as historic monuments.
  • The garden has held the remarkable garden label since 2004.
  • The balustraded terrace with its statues, overlooking the water mirror, is the oldest classified feature on site.
  • The eastern end of the park was cut off in 1964 by the construction of the A1 motorway, which alters the overall perception of the estate.
