Schloss Rammelburg stands in a loop of the Wipper river at Mansfeld, in Saxony-Anhalt. Tradition holds that it began around 992 as a small palisaded stronghold, and over the centuries it was rebuilt many times before taking on its present neo-Renaissance appearance in the early twentieth century, following a severe fire in 1894. Ownership passed through numerous hands across almost a thousand years, from the counts of Mansfeld to the princely house of Thurn und Taxis, before the state and later a private owner took charge of it. The building's recent history has been shaped by disputed ownership and the scale of restoration it still requires.
