To make a day of it

Schloss Mauren stands in Ehningen (Landkreis Böblingen), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Mauren stands in Ehningen on the site of a medieval moated castle that was already destroyed in 1395 by Count Eberhard the Mild. Rebuilt in the early seventeenth century to plans by Heinrich Schickhardt for the von Dachenhausen family, and later completed by the Schertlin von Burtenbach, the estate passed through several owners before being almost entirely destroyed in a 1943 bombing raid. Only the ground floor, a vaulted cellar and parts of a nineteenth-century garden survived, and two modern bungalows were later built over the protected remains without disturbing the historic masonry.

What to know

  • This is no longer a castle in the usual sense: only a seventeenth-century ground floor and vaulted cellar survived the 1943 bombing.
  • Two modern bungalows now stand on the site, built in 2005 over the protected remains without altering them.
  • No visiting hours, fees or access information are available, as the site is now in private use.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany, which protects the surviving masonry remains.
