To make a day of it

Burg Müneck stands in Ammerbuch (Landkreis Tübingen), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Müneck is a vanished hilltop castle, of which only ditches and earthen ramparts remain above Breitenholz, a district of Ammerbuch. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries by the lords of Müneck, a junior branch of the lords of Hailfingen serving the counts palatine of Tübingen, it stood on a hilltop with wide views to the south and west. No walls or buildings have survived: only deep ditches, over ten metres in places, an earth rampart, and a few scattered dressed stones mark the former site. The location now lies within a nature reserve protecting the western slope of the Schönbuch.

What to know

  • No walls or buildings remain visible, only ditches and an earthen rampart in the forest.
  • The site sits on a wooded hilltop above Breitenholz within a nature reserve, so reaching it involves a walk through the woods.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, since this is an open-air ruin site with no management structure.
  • Visiting mainly means tracing the remaining ditches and rampart in the terrain, which takes a bit of attentiveness.
  • The place suits a walk in the Schönbuch forest rather than a conventional castle visit.
