To make a day of it
Schloss Martinsburg stands in Lahnstein (Rhein-Lahn-Kreis), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Martinsburg stands in Lahnstein, on the site where the Archbishop of Mainz had a customs post built in 1298 to collect tolls along the Rhine. Unlike many medieval strongholds in the valley, it was never destroyed, and its hexagonal keep, raised around 1400, still dominates the complex. The building shows the marks of successive extensions, from the Gothic wing added in the 14th century to the Baroque range built between 1719 and 1721 to close the courtyard on the Rhine side. Now in private hands, it houses apartments, offices, a carnival museum and a mint.
