Built at the end of the 13th century by Albrecht von Löwenstein, son of King Rudolf I of Habsburg, it passed through several owners before being converted into a hotel in the 20th century. The pair of neighbouring strongholds gave rise to a legend of feuding brothers, later taken up by Heinrich Heine in a poem. The site now lies within the UNESCO World Heritage area of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
