To make a day of it
Grafenschloss Diez stands in Diez (Rhein-Lahn-Kreis), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 11th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Grafenschloss Diez rises above the old town of Diez on a porphyry outcrop, close to where the Aar flows into the Lahn. Construction began in the second half of the 11th century under the counts of Diez, and the stronghold went through several roles over time, from a count's residence to a Renaissance palace, before becoming a prison from the late 18th century until 1928. Visitors today can see the square 11th century keep, the south wing built in 1485 with strong Dutch craftsmanship influences, and the St Remigius chapel merged into the great hall.
