To make a day of it

Schloss Oranienstein stands in Diez (Rhein-Lahn-Kreis), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 17th century. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Oranienstein stands at Diez, raised from 1672 on the ruins of a Benedictine abbey at the request of Countess Albertine Agnes of Nassau-Dietz, who intended it as her dower residence. The five-winged building seen today largely dates from the 1704 to 1709 remodelling carried out to designs by Daniel Marot, son of the architect of Versailles. It retains an early 18th century baroque chapel, decorated with Italian stucco work and a ceiling painting of Pentecost. Occupied by the Bundeswehr since the late 1950s, the castle also houses the Oranien-Nassau Museum.
