Schloss Harzgerode stands at the centre of the small town of Harzgerode, in the southern Harz region. From 1635 to 1709 it served as the residence of the Harzgerode branch of the House of Anhalt. Today the castle houses the Harzkugeleum, a museum devoted to the wooden ball, a traditional craft product of the Harz region.
