To make a day of it

Schloss Gröba stands in Riesa (Landkreis Meißen), in Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Gröba stands in the Gröba district of Riesa, on the banks of the Elbe, with its park reaching down to the river. This baroque manor house was built in 1707 by Johann Georg von Arnim, who had acquired the estate through marriage. Its facade with Dutch influences, its three-bay balcony projection resting on four Doric columns, and its pediment bearing two coats of arms make it a notable architectural landmark of the town. The surrounding park still holds trees some 300 years old along with historic outbuildings, including a coach house, a gateway and a grotto.

What to know

  • The schloss stands at Kirchstraße 46 in the Gröba district of Riesa and can be reached by car.
  • The interior is not open to tourist visits, as the building currently serves as an assisted-living residence for the elderly.
  • The park and the outer grounds, including the restored coach house with a community-run café and an exhibition space, can be explored on one's own.
  • The Elbe floods of 2002 and 2013 caused significant damage to the site, which explains some of the renovation work visible on the outbuildings.
