To make a day of it

Schloss Christiansburg (Eisenberg) stands in Eisenberg (Saale-Holzland-Kreis), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Christiansburg stands on a hill above the old town of Eisenberg, on the site of a medieval stronghold first recorded in the 12th century. Between 1677 and 1692, Duke Christian of Sachsen-Eisenberg had the complex rebuilt as a three-winged baroque residence, adding the adjoining Trinity church. Only the west wing survives from the earlier Renaissance building, while the main façade still shows its red sandstone portal topped by a balcony resting on Corinthian columns. The castle now houses the offices of the Saale-Holzland district administration, which restricts access to the interior.

What to know

  • The castle now serves as the seat of the district administration (Landratsamt), so the interior cannot be freely visited.
  • In practice, a visit is limited to the exterior, the red sandstone portal and the two adjoining gardens, including an arched garden and a kitchen garden with pavilion.
  • The adjoining Trinity church, built between 1679 and 1692, is part of the ensemble and can be seen from outside.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Thuringia.
  • No opening hours or admission fees are given, so a visit mainly means walking around the building and its park.
