To make a day of it

Schloss Adolfsburg stands in Kirchhundem (Kreis Olpe), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Adolfsburg is a moated château standing at the entrance to Oberhundem, part of the municipality of Kirchhundem, in the Hundem valley. Built in the 1670s for Johann Adolf von Fürstenberg, a canon of Münster cathedral, it was intended as a retirement retreat on the site of an older stronghold. The two storey baroque main building, flanked by projecting corner towers, still holds a knights' hall with fireplaces and an alabaster bust attributed to the sculptor Johann Mauritz Gröninger. The building is now divided into private apartments, so it is mainly seen and appreciated from the outside and its partly preserved park.

What to know

  • The château is now divided into private apartments, so there is no interior visit.
  • Visitors can still walk around the building and along the partly preserved park dating from 1713.
  • The Hundem stream runs just south of the château, underlining its character as a moated residence.
  • No opening hours or admission fees are published, as viewing is limited to the exterior.
  • The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in North Rhine-Westphalia.
