To make a day of it

Nellenburg stands in Stockach (Landkreis Konstanz), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Nellenburg is a medieval hilltop castle ruin standing on a rocky spur about two kilometres west of the old town of Stockach. It served as the power centre of the Landgraviate of Nellenburg, whose counts had their seat there from the mid tenth century onward. A siege in 1291 and later destruction during the Thirty Years' War left the site largely ruined, though its remains still command the landscape between Lake Constance and the Hegau region. On a clear day the site offers views reaching as far as the Austrian, Swiss and even French Alps.

What to know

  • The site sits on a rocky promontory, so reaching it involves an uphill walk from Stockach or nearby.
  • This is an open-air ruin with no known guided visitor facilities.
  • Nearby stands the so-called 'young Nellenburg', a separate former estate building distinct from the main ruin.
  • No opening hours, fees or accessibility information are available for this site.
