Schloss Mainau stands on Mainau Island in Konstanz, in the Landkreis Konstanz, Baden-Württemberg, facing Lake Constance. Built between 1739 and 1746 to designs by architect Johann Caspar Bagnato for the Teutonic Order, it forms a symmetrical horseshoe-shaped complex opening toward the mainland, its broad front facing the lake. Inside, the Weißer Saal, a former audience hall redecorated in white and gold in 1883, remains the building's showpiece. The ground floor houses the Wappensaal, used for exhibitions, along with the castle café.

What to know

  • The Wappensaal on the ground floor hosts exhibitions open to island visitors.
  • The baroque Schlosskirche St. Marien, decorated by Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer with ceiling paintings by Franz Joseph Spiegler, stands a short walk from the castle.
  • A millinery workshop run by Countess Diana Bernadotte can be visited near the Schloss.
