Schloss Maurach lies on the shore of Lake Constance, right below the Birnau pilgrimage church near Uhldingen-Mühlhofen. Despite its name, it was never a noble residence but a group of utility buildings belonging to Salem Abbey, first recorded in 1155 and rebuilt in baroque style after 1722 under Abbot Stephan I. Jung. It served as a farm estate, a landing place for goods and a summer retreat for the abbots, later being converted into a conference venue and, more recently, a hotel.
